Final Blog

I took Premise of School for an introduction into the life of teaching. I have gained much knowledge as to what is needed from a teacher, and how to decide if I am truly prepared to become a teacher. It has been a very educational class, that I enjoyed taking.

Education to its fullest.

Significance of Social Justice.

What is social justice? "The processes which seek to ensure the maintenance of a fair, equitable, egalitarian and generally harmonious society". It is definitely a topic that should be introduced to the students. It is such an important aspect of life. It is easy enough to talk about equality amongst people, but it is another thing to follow through with those beliefs. As a future teacher, it is obvious to understand that all students are different. There is not student alike. They have their different belief and ways of living. They come from different families with different backgrounds. All teachers see this, and should teach their students to understand this as well. All students should understand their differences, and how important they are, but also how important it is to seek equality.

Social justice needs to be taught in the school for the health of our future. Students need to learn how important social justice is and what it means for us as a community. Students are our future, and they are the ones who can change our future. Us as educators are here to help them along the way. Social justice is important to me as an educator because it can be a means of changing the way people treat one another. If everyone can show respect towards one another a lot of minor problems won't happen, helping the process of slowing down the major problems that come from not having social justice. www.usq.edu.au/planstats/Docs/GlossaryTerms.doc

Model of Education.

The purpose of teaching is to prepare students for a future full of happiness. Students need to feel comfortable in school in order to feel happiness. In order to feel comfortable, teachers need to understand their students and how they are best able to achieve in the educational careers. It is not easy for teachers to make every single one of their students happy, but they have to try. A successful student will be the student who is willingly in class everyday prepared to learn. If the student is comfortable in the classroom it will be an easy task to get the students to learn. Teachers also need to keep their students attention. It is not easy due to the long school day, and the cutting back on recess. Students are not able to get out and release energy, but teachers need to account for this and make their lesson plans more interesting for their students.

Teaching is like a picture. It has its flaws, but in the grand scheme of things it is perfect. Teaching is not always an easy job, there are always ups and downs, but the times that students are all happy and learning- that is why teachers choose their profession. Looking from the outside in, teaching is a hard job. There are a lot of requirements and times where things are hard to deal with. Not all students are going to be a joy to teach, nor are they going to be days where nothing goes wrong, but in the end teaching brings fulfillment. It is the final picture, the masterpiece. The time where everyone sits backs and enjoys the accomplishments.

Issues facing Schools today

An issue facing many schools today is when to implement sex and drug education. Many people feel elementary school is too young, but they do not realize how young students are becoming active in sex and drugs. It is happening at younger ages as time goes on. Many people do not want to believe it, while others choose not to, but facts are facts. It is happening. Students need to learn about the consequences of their actions. Sex and drug education should be introduced to elementary aged students. They do not need to know the entire aspects of sex and drugs, but they should get an introduction to it. It is hard to believe how young some of the students are, but I have personally seen students getting themselves into trouble as low as or lower than the fifth grade. Introductions to this education should start sooner than later, for the safety of our future generations.

Montessori Schools

What is a Montessori School?

A Montessori school is a school that encourages the development of children's perceptual, motor, intellectual, and social skills. In Montessori schools there is an emphasis on self-directed activity of the children and observation by the teacher. Materials are used to students can discover the physical properties of objects. "They assis students indirectly by asking questions or providing additional materials to help students learn." Grades are self-corrected showing freedom withing the structure. Like the picture to the left, Montessori schools use materials and methods designed to be developmentally appropriate for young children.

What I learned about Montessori Schools?

Montessori Schools are a different way of teaching that keep the children in mind, and there way of developing. They realize that children develop and think differently than adults. It is important for people to realize this about children and that they are not adults, they are trying to develop into adults. I learned that it is important for teachers to realize this about their students.

My thoughts on Montessori Schools are . . .

This type of schooling is good for children starting out at school. They are able to develop at their own pace and are not pressured into being like everyone else. I have seen that students who have trouble reading often get frustrated instead of being taught at their own pace. They are rushed along with the rest of the class causing them to dislike reading more and more as they continued as they keep growing. Other students who are stronger with their math skills are tied don because they have to stay with the rest of their class. This is a good way to have students develop at their own pace using physical properties. Using physical properties are good for students because they are way to let the student physically and mentally establish what they are learning.

Enviornmental Justice

What is enviornmental Justice?

"The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Fair treatment means that no group of people including a racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic group should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, municipal, and commercial operations or the execution of federal, state, local, and tribal programs and policies."

Enviornmental justice wants equal protection from environmental and public health hazards for all people. No one should have to deal with disproportionate share of negative enviornmental consequences.

Should teachers teach about enviornmental justice?

Students should understand that everybody has a right to clean water and clean air, and nobody has a right to degrade and destroy the environment. I have been learning a lot about the conservation commition in my city because of the location of my dad's building. He had to make sure that while building this project he did not contaminate the surrounding wet lands. He had to put up with a lot of fights within the city and from the city council, but he did more then the adequate amount of testing and found that he would not be contaminating the area. Since the previous owner had the spot consisting of a junk yard, he has cleaned it up quite a bit. They also found that the roofs will have cleaner water flow into the enviornment than the previous junk yard and then the asphalt.

The picture to the left was the previous junk yard, that was a serious enviornmental hazard. The picture below is the new building that has cleaned up the area of the junk yard and has changed the view of this area.

I found it very important to be learning about this and I think it is very important for students to learn about the safety of the enviornment and the equality of social justice. Students need to know they have the right to drink clean water and breath fresh air; they also need to know that degrading and destorying the enviornment is not right.
